ATTRIBUTES—-
INVENTOR
WHO IS GOD? INVENTOR
God put incredible detail into every aspect of life. We can see this in the physical world in the intricate designs of our fingerprints, the sparkle in the eyes of a child, or the veins in a single leaf. Examples abound that point to God as the inventor of all life.
God was just as intentional in designing the good life as He was in physically designing us, our world, and the galaxies. The laws about what is good, what is bad, and the way people should be treated, as well as the way we were made to find satisfaction in our relationships with Him and with people in good community, have all been seen since the beginning of the world. God invented the world with the good of all things in mind. He looked at all of His creation in every visible aspect and every invisible aspect (morality, emotions, relationship dynamics) and called it good. God defines the good life for the creation He invented.
WHO AM I? INVENTED BUT REBELLIOUS
Naturally, we each want to be our own inventor. If you watch a group of young children interact, it won’t take long before you see each child defining what is his or what she wants to do. No one teaches us to be self-defining. Sin causes us to want to be in control and define what is right and wrong, what is ours, and what we want. Not only do each of us try to shape our image on the outside, but we also have a natural desire to define life for ourselves. Essentially, we want to define the good life.
Now, this is not always bad. God did give us free will to make decisions. He did not create us to be robots who would mindlessly follow His invented design. But we often go way past where we were made to go. Even with our will given to us by God, we tend to want to function outside of His design for the good life. Think about it: If a designer builds a car for a specific type of road, what is a driver’s natural desire? Let me try it on that other road and see if it works! This is seen in every area of life and leads to lots of different sins. Greed. Coveting. Lust. Selfishness. Worshiping what we create. The list is endless. Paul says, “Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools” (Romans 1:21-22). Who is defining the good life for you—you or God?
WHAT DO I DO? FOLLOW GOD’S WAY
Paul writes a line that feels like a punch in the mouth in Romans 1:25: “They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise!” Yikes. Who wants to live a lie? Yet we all do it!
Paul is not saying that we lie all the time. Rather, he is making the point that God created us to know and worship God, our inventor, and live lives of freedom within the loving parameters He has designed for the good life. He knows what actually satisfies us most. Why? Because He invented our very makeup, our world, and the ways we should interact with one another.
Believing this takes trust in the inventor’s instructions. God did not leave us blind—He has given us His Word. We should value and search out the inventor’s instructions for our lives in all areas. Do you want to know how to have a clean heart? Listen to His Word about forgiveness in Jesus. Do you want to know how to live at peace with people? Look to His Word for guidance on relationships and love. Do you want to know how to handle your time, know your purpose, know what matters, or know how to be satisfied in this life and the next? God gives answer after answer for how He wants us to live out the good life, even in this world that runs so counter to His original design. Follow His instructions.
